Why, When & How to Use Legal Counsel in Divorce

Have you ever started a DIY project and realized that it was costing you more time, energy and/or money than if you had just hired a professional from the beginning?

Have you ever purchased something from IKEA and decided to assemble it without looking at the directions or using the tools that come with the kit?

Have you ever hired a professional that overcharged you for the project, didn’t finish on time or deliver what they promised?

Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.” – Albert Einstein

Imagine the disaster of a DIY divorce that didn’t include proper research, the correct tools, or sound legal or financial direction.  And yet this is a lot more common than you might think.

Conversely, how many times have you heard of someone who hired a divorce lawyer only to get sucked dry of all their money and never get a solid resolution?

So, how can you avoid both extremes?

Nowadays the people know the cost of everything and the value of nothing.

It starts by knowing your options and then choosing the best divorce process for you and your family.  This is, unfortunately, where listening to well-meaning friends, family and colleagues can cost you the most.  Personal life choices, especially involving legal matters, should never be based on someone else’s experiences.

The traditional, fight it out in court, divorce battles are becoming a thing of the past as people are learning to divorce smarter, faster and with less conflict.  While I will always recommend having a legal expert on your divorce team, how and when you include them in the process could vary greatly depending on your personal divorce journey.

It isn’t always about adding resources, it’s about ensuring that your resources are appropriately allocated. – Cathy Allen

This month’s blog and featured articles are dedicated to helping you understand why legal counsel is essential, when you may need to start with an attorney and when it might be better to consult with legal counsel further into the process.

Don’t become a DIY divorce disaster.  We invite you to do your research, find the right process for you, personally, use the best tools, and hire the most qualified professionals at the right time for you.  Every divorce journey is unique and, if you must take it, you deserve to choose the right path for you, your family, your finances, and your future.
