Divorce Dollars & Social Responsibility

There’s no doubt about it.  Divorce can really turn someone’s financial world upside down and inside out. Often one spouse is traditionally the wage earner and the other is the caretaker for the home and/or children.  Even in our modern world, where many households have two working spouses, each will now have to support his/her own household on one income.

Here at Divorce Money Matters, my goal is to help couples divorce “their spouse not their money” ™ so that each person leaves the marriage with a fair and equitable settlement that includes as much money in their pocket as possible and a clear vision of what their post-divorce life will look like.

I believe in trying to get a balance between individual freedom on the one hand and social responsibility on the other.
— Chris Patten

So, as investments are divided, retirement accounts split and assets separated, what should you do with the portion you will receive?  How much should you invest?  Where should you invest it?  More and more people don’t just want to secure their personal financial future, they also want to invest in protecting the planet and be socially responsible with their investments.

The same is true when it comes to what we buy and how we spend our money going forward.  The new, positive trend is to use hard-earned resources wisely, on socially responsibly companies and organic, sustainable products.

All of us share the responsibility and the opportunity to co-create a better world.
— Christiana Figeueres

The unfortunate truth is that not all companies do what they say or are what they claim and not all organically labeled products are healthy.  So, how do we make sure that our spending and investments are truly making a difference?   This month on The Divorce Do’s & Don’ts Show*, we’ll be dedicating two entire episodes to Divorce Dollars & Socially Responsible Investing and Spending. You’ll have the chance to join us live and ask our guests your personal questions at the end of each show.  Or you can watch the recorded episodes on the DivorceTown USA® YouTube channel at your convenience.

Divorce is never easy, and we want to help you have a happier, healthier, saner divorce by avoiding common, costly, and sometimes permanent mistakes.  We also hope to bring you a fresh perspective by seeing what new insights and doors this process may be able to open for you as you write the next chapter of your life.
